THE IGNATIAN YEAR BEGINS WITH A BLAST AS STUDENTS COMMEMORATE CANNONBALL DAY

To kick off the Ignatian Year, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the conversion of St. Ignatius, boys and girls from the freshman and sophomore classes celebrated the annual Cannonball Day on May 19 and 20. In their theology classes, these students learned more about the life of St. Ignatius and his momentous conversion following a leg injury from a cannonball during the battle of Pamplona between the French and Spanish in 1521. The festivities, coordinated by Regis Jesuit theology teachers led by Rick Wolf and Adam Lomas '10, began with a battle reenactment where students fired cannons (water balloons) at an image of St. Ignatius. Students also challenged each other in an obstacle course and enjoyed ice cream together to celebrate the founder of the Society of Jesus and our gratitude for our Catholic, Jesuit education. This fun, community-building celebration helps to animate the amazing journey of Ignatius and inspires us to continue his mission. You can read more about the history of Cannonball Day and the upcoming celebrations for the Ignatian Year, which will culminate next year on July 31, 2022, Ignatius’ Feast Day.
