SARAH ANDERSON '12 AUTHORS ARTICLES FOR DISCOVER MAGAZINE

Great Raider Sarah Anderson Whittom '12 recently penned two articles that were published in January and February issues of Discover Magazine.
In the Health segment of the January 27 issue, Anderson wrote a piece entitled "Why More People Are Becoming Nearsighted" in which she shares recent findings towards an upward trend in myopia, or nearsightedness, in adults. In the article, Anderson notes that almost half of the global population is projected to have myopia by 2050 due to possible contributing factors like stress, exhaustion and "near work," such as reading and writing. Additionally, scientists hypothesize that a lack of outdoor time may be at play and encourage taking breaks to spend time outside each day.

Her article titled "Sealed for 50 Years, Rare Apollo Lunar Sample Will Have Its Opening Day" was published on February 7 in the magazine's Sciences section. Anderson writes how researchers are only now beginning to study lunar samples taken during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. Apollo 17’s sample 73001, which was collected from a pile of debris deposited by a lunar landslide and stored in an elaborate air-tight apparatus ever since, will be opened for the first time in the coming weeks. Researchers hope to understand how lunar volatiles can be used as a resource to support human presence on the moon as well as capture a more complete picture of the history and evolution of the moon.
