KAITLYN CULLITON '07 EDUCATES STUDENTS ON LITERACY NEEDS IN BORDER COMMUNITIES

Great Raider Dr. Kaitlyn Culliton '07, an assistant professor of English at Texas A&M International University, teaches the Multicultural Children’s Literature course at the university. As part of the curriculum, students wrote multicultural books in support of the TAMIU Border Literature Project, an organization that aims to support early childhood literacy by increasing access to diverse children’s literature and educating and promoting multicultural authors. Her students authored, illustrated and published more than 100 books to help tutor local elementary school students who are struggling with reading and writing.
These books seek to remedy the lack of diversity in children's literature and to inspire a love of reading in children of border communities. The team also launched the TAMIU Border Literature Project website, where they will continue to provide free children's books that highlight the unique border community of Laredo, Texas. Aligning with the Regis Jesuit mission statement, this project exemplifies promoting justice and mercy through intellect and compassion to serve others. Way to be With and for Others!
