BUTCH LEWIS '06 STRESSES MAKING THE MOST OF THE OPPORTUNITIES PRESENTED

Great Raider Wendell "Butch" Lewis '06 shared his experience of navigating the opportunities offered to him as an athlete with attendees at the Strike Zone Academy football camp. One of the most sought-after prep football players in the country, Lewis went to USC where he played offensive lineman and was named to the 2007 Freshman All-American second team. From experience, Lewis knows how short an NFL career can be and wants to stress to the camp attendees the importance of earning a college degree and taking advantage of the opportunities presented to prep athletes.
Upon earning his degree, he was signed as a free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs but was waived during training camp before being signed then released by the Minnesota Vikings. "It's easy to get into the mindset of going to have a great career and make all the money, but the reality is your career is going to be short," Lewis said. "Having that diploma, that degree for your future and the future of your family and your kids is something that can't be taken from you."
Butch is now a mechanical engineer for a Denver-area hospital.
