RAIDERS CELEBRATE NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
On September 26, the Latinos Unidos Club and Spanish Honors Society organized a colorful and fun cultural festivity on John Sheridan '76 Quad in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Students took part in creating colorful flags, learned more about various countries and cultural attire, enjoyed great food and listened and danced to music in honor of our community's Hispanic/Latin culture, as well as the diverse and vibrant Hispanic/Latino culture locally and globally.
The event, which focused on four main components—Familia (family), Fiesta (party), Comida (food) and Comunidad (community), was an opportunity for students to embrace and enjoy the culture. As part of the monthlong celebration, the RJ Libraries are displaying the stories and works by and about people in the Hispanic community. In addition, the Latinos Unidos Club has shared a piece of their Catholic religious tradition by reading prayers to important Hispanic saints in Spanish each Wednesday during morning prayer and offering the afternoon Examen in Spanish each Friday throughout the month.
As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and pray for our seniors who will soon embark on immersion encounters in new cultures and communities, we share this beautiful prayer in honor of the Hispanic people who devote their lives to our Lady of Guadalupe and make promises to her by lighting candles or making pilgrimages and Mandas to visit her at the Basilica in Mexico. Let us call upon her motherly love as we pray to our Lady of Guadalupe to open our hearts to love and inclusion always.
