Immersion Experience: Denver

DAY 3 -- COMIDA PARA TODOS

Ale 26'
Today we returned to some of the organizations we visited on Monday. A group of us spent the morning at Metro Caring.
While there, we are basically in a small grocery store where visitors can shop for as many groceries as they can fit in their bins. My job was similar to someone who checks you out of King Sooper’s or Costco but instead of adding up the cost of the groceries, I measured the weight of the shopping carts. Metro Caring gives out free food and weighs the food to see how much they give to people each week. After I checked them out, other Regis students led them to the loading tables and helped them pack their groceries into bags. A few of us also helped people schedule future appointments or helped people access bus tickets. We didn’t all have the same job but we all contributed in some way.

After being at Metro Caring for a few hours, we went to Village Exchange Center. Like Metro Caring, Village Exchange Center focuses on providing food and services to anyone who needs. Most of us helped give out food but because my hand is broken, I worked at the computer checking people in. When I had some free time, I handed out diapers. This part of the day was very tiring but also very worth it. After a busy afternoon, we went back to the CVV house for Mass.

One of the Regis students, Manny, played the keyboard and sang. Normally I do not sing when we have Mass at Regis but something about being in a smaller room with people I spent the whole week with made me want to sing. I was also surprised to look around the room and see my classmates also singing, something that doesn’t always happen at school. The Mass helped me to remember and appreciate that this immersion isn’t about me but the people that we help. Showing to me that God is always present in our life. Today was a really fun and fulfilling day. I was able to help people across Denver with my classmates and see the impact a day of volunteering can have. Metro Caring and Village Exchange really appreciated our help and it felt good to be part of a bigger mission. The night ended with dinner with the CVV volunteers. Not only was the lasagna delicious but I also ran into one of my closest friends’ sisters, who lives in the CVV House! This made the night an even better one.

God Bless, Ale
