Immersion Experience: Ecuador

CHURCHES AND GIGGLES

By Luke Stienstra and Brice Newton
Day two in Quito was quite the experience. We began the morning with a peaceful wakeup knock from Mr. B. After Isaac took Luke's turn in the shower order, we proceeded down to the dining hall for some delicious eggs and cereal.
Post morning eats we assembled on the bus for a voyage to the historical city center. After a safe and scenic ride we emerged from the bus into a bustling venue. The first church we explored was the Basilica del Voto Nacional, then walked to the Church of the Society of Jesus. Both Churches were marvelous in their own splendor, and each took our breath away in different ways. We even got a special tour of the original Working Boys Center (now known as The Center for Working Families) after learning about the history of the church. On our walk back to the bus we immersed ourselves and in the busy sensations around us. Once we got back to The Center, we indulged in a muy bien lunch that consisted of spaghetti, meatballs and lentils that will be remembered. Next, we decided to explore the grounds of The Center by partaking in activities such as seesaw, football, and wandering. Then, both of us made the decision to embark upon an intensive fitness journey including running, pull-ups and push-ups, in which Brice almost threw up whilst Luke was still running. Brice needs to work out more. After separate grueling showers, we were ready for Mass here at The Center. During the Mass, Luke could barely contain his giggles because the dog, Pepina, was acting silly. He thought it was funny because dogs don't usually attend Mass. Directly after the service, we had a pizza party thanks to Domino's and the brave motorcycle driver who drove with 16 pizzas on the back of his vehicle. We concluded the day with a thoughtful reflection and some bonding with our new friends. Please make sure to tune in for tomorrow's blog.

Sending love from Quito, Brice and Luke.
