Immersion Experience: Dominican Republic

IMMERSING OURSELVES!

Christina Ortiz
I apologize that we did not post a blog last night for you all to read. Chaperone access to RJ accounts was unexpectedly blocked after landing internationally. The issue has been resolved, and we intend to post a blog this evening! (I do travel with emergency contact information at all times and still had the ability to communicate with you all from my cell if needed.)
We had a beautiful day yesterday immersing ourselves in the community, attending Mass and participating in a scavenger hunt in the city. We took public transportation for a short 20-minute ride, chatted and bartered with locals, tasted Dominican ice cream, visited a monument and soaked in the cool air as some Caribbean rain fell around ILAC upon our return.

After dinner, we took merengue and bachata dance lessons and ended the evening in prayer and reflection. The kids really embraced the dance lessons and had fun with it! We discussed the various spiritual and mental roadblocks that were coming up in the first day and practiced noticing without judging, then challenged ourselves to sink a little deeper into the experience by letting many of the trivial discomforts go.

As I write this, we are on our way to campo to meet our host families. The kids are anxiously excited and certainly a little nervous. Say an extra special prayer for them today that they may find the grace to see Christ in their hosts and in themselves.

Everyone is healthy!

Christ’s peace,
Christina
