Immersion Experience: Honduras

SAN PEDRO SULA - DAY 2

First visit to Ocotillo
Today was our first visit to Ocotillo, the community outside of the garbage dump. We arrived to the most amazing welcoming party—signs with each of our names, balloons, and the kids were dressed up in traditional folk dancing costumes. It truly felt like an invitation into their lives and community. After an incredible folk dance performance (and party) by the local children, we visited the elementary school, stopping in each classroom. The smiles and hugs we received made us feel so loved and appreciated just by being there. We played a very intense, but very fun, game of soccer at the community center, and shared many laughs and conversations with the kids.

After lunch, we got the opportunity to hear from older scholarship recipients who are now attending university (nursing, law, and journalism majors). They shared their experience of growing up in Ocotillo, and it was very impactful to hear about the struggles the students faced.  This is still a reality for many of the younger children in the community. Talking to the kids was the most moving part of the day. They were all so eager and kind to each of us, and simply just wanted to share conversation with us. -Ella and Celie
