A Ramptastic First Day

Aiden Robison and Joseph Haubert
We woke up early to eat breakfast, and head over to our work sites. We learned so much about the Appalachians from Barbara and our site leader Jerry.
We started the day with a 40-minute drive to a woman named Barbara a very sweet old lady. She lived in a more run-down area and her house was littered to say the least. She had auto parts to soda cans. You name she had it. It was hard to see a person live like that. Junk was everywhere; there were unfinished projects along with a rotting deck. We started with a demolition of her rotten deck. In our opinions it was the most fun part of the workday. After we tore apart the deck we started on building the frames for a new deck. We finished the deck frame and then started to build the ramp frame for her. She was disabled and quite old so this ramp would help her get in and out of her house. We stopped for lunch around 12 and then got right back to work. Barbara then came out and gave us a glimpse into her life and how much it differed from our lives. Her life was full of hardships, and she told us how she was married when she was 14. We drove home and had some free time so most of spent it outside. A lot of us played kickball. It was a really good time and even though most of do not know each other that well, we have grown close over these past couple of days. We enjoyed dinner than did our reflection and went to bed. We all were pooped and slept like babies. It was a great first day and we are excited for the free day tomorrow.
