DAY 2: CROSSING THE BORDER

Chiara Evangelista ‘26, Jack Magoon ‘26 & Mia Mendozza ‘26
Hey guys! It’s Mia, Jack, and Chiara. Today we crossed the border, spent the afternoon at Friendship Park, ate authentic food then arrived at the shelter where we’ll be at for the remainder of our stay.
This morning we got on our buses after breakfast and got dropped off right before the border. With our passports in hand we walked across and went straight through. Then we got back on our buses and went to Friendship Park which is the more colorful Tijuana side of the giant wall, unlike the US side which is grey and gloomy.

We also got to meet our new friend Ricarbol, who showed us around Friendship Park, situated right against the wall painted from top to bottom with colorful murals and surrounded by gardens tended to by volunteers. There is so much hope, love, and community on the Tijuana side. The people transformed something that was so negative into something positive and welcoming.

For lunch, we all went to different restaurants and had to overcome the language barrier. The one we went to was called Ocean Front and we were able to see residents interacting with the border control military. After visiting Friendship Park, we settled in at the shelter we are staying at this week. We are all staying on the fifth floor and had homemade enchiladas for dinner prepared with love by cooks here. Then we had time for reflection up on the sixth floor where they have a chapel overlooking Tijuana and San Diego.

We are thankful to everyone who is with us and has made this trip possible- Alethea, Kique, Ricarbol, the amazing cocineras, Mr. Monaghan, Mr. Shoemaker, and Mrs. Kelly!
