  • Thomas Messenger '65

Thomas Messenger '65, brother of Frank '60 (also deceased), passed away on March 26, 2026.

"Tom was born in Denver, Colorado, on October 31, 1947. He graduated from Regis High School and Colorado State University and later earned his master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Tom spent the majority of his career with the Colorado State Health Department, where he served as Director of the Consumer Protection Division. Throughout his career, he was also actively involved with the National Food and Drug Association. Tom met Susan Nusbaum in early 1970, and they were married in 1971. Although Tom and Sue did not have children of their own, they were deeply admired and loved as parent figures by many children throughout the years, especially their many nieces and nephews. Both retired around 2000 and spent the next decade traveling, golfing, and enjoying time at their home in Montana. Tom lost Sue in 2010 after her fiercely fought battle with ovarian cancer. Family was the center of Tom’s life. After returning from California upon completing his studies, he and Sue moved in temporarily with his grandmother and great-grandmother. They soon realized how much joy their presence brought and chose to stay, especially as it became clear that their beloved Bertha needed care. Throughout the years, Tom and Sue generously dedicated themselves to looking after Bertha, and eventually, Tom’s mother as well. Tom provided Sue with unconditional love and support throughout her illness and continued to offer that same devotion to his mother during the remainder of her life. After the loss of both Sue and his mother, Tom chose to live his life as he knew they would have wanted him to. He continued to golf, travel, and spend as much time as possible in Montana. He was also deeply committed to keeping family bonds strong, maintaining close connections with his siblings through regular phone calls and shared meals whenever possible. Tom had a remarkable gift for making people feel special. He treasured his relationships and, without ever being overt, had a way of letting others know just how valued they were in his life. Those who knew Tom will forever remember his generosity, his steadfast love for family, and his gift for making others feel truly seen." Click here to view the full obituary.

Services celebrating Tom's life will be held on Saturday, April 25 at 11:00 am at Horan & McConaty Mortuary (1091 S. Colorado Blvd., Denver, CO 80246), followed by a luncheon at Gallo Italian Supper Club and Bakery (3470 S. Broadway, Englewood, CO 80113).

We join the prayers of the community of Regis Jesuit with yours for the repose of Tom's soul and the consolation of his family and all those who loved him. May he rest in peace.

"Joan spent her early years in Goodland, Kansas, and Limon, Colorado, before moving to Denver after high school. She and George were married in 1966, and they spent the next 53 years living happily together in the Lakewood area. Joan gave birth to her son Brian the following year and became a devoted, loving mother who was always there with words of comfort and encouragement. She re-entered the workforce in 1984 as a teacher’s assistant at the elementary school level in Jefferson County, where she worked for the next 16 years. Joan was a caring and calming influence in the classroom. She had a unique ability to connect with young people, and they treasured their time with “Mrs. T”. After retiring from Jefferson County Schools, Joan spent countless hours working with Catholic Charities and St. Vincent de Paul to help those in need. It was also during this time that she became a proud grandmother. She relished the time she spent with her four grandchildren, and they brought her immense happiness and joy.
