David Churchill

We are saddened to inform you that David Churchill, father of Parker '17, Allyssa '19 and Zachary '22 passed away on March 11, 2020. Click here to read the full obituary.
"David Carl Churchill of Parker, Colorado passed away peacefully in San Francisco, CA on March 11, 2020. In typical Dave fashion, he managed to leave this world on a big news day as the WHO officially declared a pandemic. However, his passing was unrelated to the news. Dave is survived by his children Parker, Ally and Zach and his wife Kasey (Astleford).

Dave was born in 1972 to the man he called his best friend, Leonard Churchill and Laura McCormick (deceased) and was also adored by his second mom Kay (Fields) Churchill.  In addition to his parents and children, he is survived by his 5 brothers: Matt Rakoczy (Cat), Mark Rakoczy (Carol), Rob Churchill (Nancy), Paul Rakoczy (Cris), and Mark Churchill (Gretchen). In addition to his brothers, he leaves godchildren and many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly, both actual relatives and those unrelated to him that lovingly called him Uncle Dave.

Dave attended Guardian Angels Elementary School in Clawson, MI and Bishop Foley High School in Madison Heights, MI and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1994. After meeting while studying at Oxford University in England, Dave and Kasey were married in December of 1994. They lived in Cincinnati, OH, began their family in Troy, MI, and then lived in Northville, MI and finally settled in Parker, CO. Dave was passionate about a number of things. First and foremost, he adored his kids and shared many of his passions with them. His love for running (after completing his first of many marathons in Detroit when he turned 30) inspired his kids to compete in track and cross country from the time they were around 7 through high school. Together, they ran many 5Ks and other races like the Bolder Boulder 10K. The kids and Kasey supported him through his training and cheered from the side for many of his marathons and his IronMan competitions.

He made sure that all of the kids and his Dad spent time in one of his very favorite places—the golf course at Pradera. He managed to get a few holes in one there, but more important than that, he made so many amazing friends that truly became family. The 26 years of the humbly named Churchill Invitational brought friends from all areas of his life together on golf courses all around the US and beyond. Ski trips with lifelong friends, poker games, family hikes and Family Jeopardy are some of the favorite memories shared with his kids and Kasey. The Dads’ Camping Trip was so special for Dave and the kids. He loved his many chocolate labs and seemed to be developing a habit of surprising his family with lab puppies every few years! You may not know this about Dave, but he really liked Michigan football. A lot. He was a season ticket holder since 1990 and made sure Parker, Ally, Zach and Kasey all had a chance to experience the Big House and the famous tailgates with all of his Michigan Faithful.

Immediately after college, Dave took a job with Unum and created lifelong friendships and connections across the United States that led to a variety of jobs and consulting experiences and helped with his entrepreneurial ventures. As a leader, Dave mentored, inspired and helped dozens of young professionals to begin and sustain successful careers. He most recently would call himself an HR Tech Sherpa but his career was spent in the benefits industry and he worked at/with companies such as Assurant, Jellyvision, Axa, and most recently Zenefits.

He made us laugh. He loved hard. He took pride in policing grammar for anyone who was brave enough to text or email him. He loved to travel. He made life exciting for his family and understood the value of staying active and having fun. There is so much to say that it is difficult to even begin to encapsulate the life that Dave lived and the people he loved. It would be impossible to fully describe the husband, father, son, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend he was to so many of us in this small space. We would encourage you to share your stories on his Facebook Memorial Page so that others can share his life and the laughs as we all begin to heal from this loss."

The family plans to have a celebration of life both in Colorado and Michigan at some point over the summer. Details will be posted on Dave’s and Kasey’s Facebook pages as well as on his Facebook Memorial Page. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for contributions to a scholarship fund for Parker, Ally and Zach. If you wish to contribute, we will update with an electronic link soon, or checks can be made payable to:

Parker, Allyssa and Zachary Churchill Family Trust

If he were still with us, you might hear him say “Glad you got a chance to see me.”
