Fr. Robert Voss, SJ '59

We are saddened to inform you that Fr. Robert Voss, SJ '59 passed away on December 9.

"Bob was born on June 18, 1941 in Denver, Colorado and baptized on September 9 at Immaculate Conception Cathedral. After graduating from Regis Jesuit High in Denver he entered the Society at St. Stanislaus Seminary on August 21, 1959. He pronounced his First Vows on August 22, 1961 and after Juniorate studies proceeded to Fusz Memorial for philosophy. He earned a B.A. in Philosophy & Letters in 1965, and an M.A. in Spanish as well as a Ph.L. in 1966. From 1966 to 1969 he taught Spanish at St. Louis University High School. In 1969, Bob began his Theology studies at Woodstock College, first in Maryland and then in New York City, earning an M.Div. in 1973. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 27, 1972 in the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Denver. He pronounced his Final Vows on September 8, 1977 in the church of Santiago in Yoro, Honduras. As a priest, Bob worked exclusively in the Yoro, Honduras Mission. He left only for tertianship in Denver in 1977, for a year of sabbatical 1991-92, and to come to the Fusz Pavilion in 2017 when his failing health demanded it. In Honduras, he labored mostly in El Progreso as a mission priest, pastor of the parish, and sometimes minister of the community. Jesuits are known to be 'one of a kind'; it’s safe to say that Bob was more 'one of a kind' than most. He was both an orphan and a twin; he and his brother Ray were adopted by a Denver family in their third year of life. This unusual background seemed to give him a special connection to people on the margins. Above all else, Bob passionately loved the people of Honduras with whom he lived and worked for 43 years."
