Tim McGovern

We are saddened to inform you that Tim McGovern, father of Matthew '06, passed away on December 24.

"Tim McGovern, a long-time Denver journalist-turned-entrepreneur, died on December 24th. A third-generation Denver native born to Elinor and Ray McGovern, long deceased, McGovern attended Regis and South High Schools and earned an English degree from Colorado College. After serving as a U.S. Army combat correspondent in the Vietnam War where he earned six decorations, he embarked upon a newspaper career that took him to Ohio, Connecticut, New York, Nebraska, and finally back to his hometown, where he served from 1976-1980 as a city hall reporter for The Denver Post. In 1980, he began covering the Colorado Legislature and the governor's office for the late, lamented Rocky Mountain News. Next, he became managing editor of the Durango Herald in Durango, CO, where his newspaper won dozens of state and national awards, including the Colorado Press Association's Sweepstakes Award in 1982. He returned to Denver, became editor of Denver Magazine, Denver Business Magazine and, later, editor-in-chief of the suburban Sentinel Newspapers. After being downsized out of a job, he worked briefly as a freelance writer and taught writing and journalism at Metro State College, CU-Boulder and the University of Denver. In 1990, he founded a company, Power Points, Inc. which for the next 30 years ran football and basketball contest promotions for newspapers around the country-contests which awarded millions of dollars in prize money to newspaper readers."
