World Youth Day

DAY THREE AND FOUR: EXPLORING LISBON AND THE OPENING MASS

Ryan Gonzalez '25
We started our day by getting on the subway into downtown Lisboa.  We then walked thought the very narrow and crowded streets to the cathedral of the city, starting to see how many people had come to Lisbon for World Youth Day.
We went in and toured the church building. Like a museum inside the cathedral in the back were serval chapels that had statues and other art like pieces that depicted saints etc. We continued on to St. Anthony’s house which was also very awesome to see. A church built on the site of birthplace of St. Anthony, finder of lost things.  Later in the evening we went to the opening Mass which was held at the very top of a hill with massive screens so people could see what was happening. The field we were in was filled with people tightly pact in, with flags of many countries from all over the world being flown to represent each group and where they came from.  It was incredible to see the Mass and diversity all in one place participating as one group. Overall the first day was a amazing experience unlike no other I’ve ever seen.
