GRACE VARGA '20 REINVIGORATES CREIGHTON'S RECYCLING EFFORTS

Newly-minted Great Raider Grace Varga '20 didn't wait to start making her mark at Creighton University. Seeing that the school had gotten rid of their recycling program in lieu of a composting program as a cost-cutting measure, she took matters into her own hands and ended up starting a renewed commitment to recycling among her fellow students.
"I am very big on sustainability and went door to door in my dorm hall and collected peoples’ recycling using the carts we used to move in with," reports Varga, "I would walk the cart to a recycling plant about 15 minutes away from Creighton’s campus every week." She began working for Creighton’s Sustainability Office and helped collect and dispose of compost. When she mentioned my recycling efforts to her boss, the Director of Sustainability, he offered to help transport the recycled materials she had been collecting. After realizing the dedication to recycling that students like Grace had, they worked together to start a competition throughout most of the dorms for the month of October. The effort was an amazing success, diverting over 3702 lbs of recycling from landfills. Grace now has her sights set on instituting a recycling program entirely run by students at Creighton.  What a great testament to upholding Jesuit values in caring for our common home!
