We are a Catholic, Jesuit, college preparatory high school serving more than 1700 young men and women in grades 9-12 in becoming Men and Women with and for Others.
With nearly 150 years of history behind us, we are a Roman Catholic educational community rooted firmly in the nearly 500-year-old model of Jesuit education, leading the way in preparing students for the 21st century.
Our unique educational model combines the advantages of single-sex instruction with opportunities for young men and women to collaborate, serve, pray and socialize together to form the whole person—mind, body and spirit.
The strength of Regis Jesuit is found in the depth and diversity of its broad community of students, parents and alumni who strengthen and share their gifts through a lifelong Raider experience.
The transformational student experience has been developed thanks to a long tradition of generous philanthropic support of our enduring educational mission.
ASTROPHYSICIST AND JESUIT PRIEST FROM VATICAN OBSERVATORY VISITS RJ
Jordan Jones, SJ
In early December, Regis Jesuit welcomed Fr. David Brown, SJ, an astrophysicist from the Vatican Observatory, to address students on the Catholic Church’s view of the complementarity of faith and reason. Fr. Brown shared his vocation and career as someone who is both a Catholic priest and an astrophysicist to help to make concrete the Church’s search for truth in the scientific realm through the lens of faith. He presented both at lunch in The Z and visited several classrooms.
Pope St. John Paul II began his encyclical letter Fides et Ratio with the statement that “Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to contemplation of truth.” As a Catholic, Jesuit educational institution, the intersection of faith and reason is at the core of Regis Jesuit High School’s mission. Quite simply, if God is Truth, then the more that we can know to be true, the more we can know about God.
Fr. Brown shared with Regis Jesuit students some aspects of his journey towards becoming a priest and astrophysicist in the Society of Jesus. He discussed the Church’s long relationship with the sciences, including a discussion of the history of the Vatican Observatory. He concluded his presentation by mentioning some of his current work on the Pepsi Exoplanet Transit Survey Workshop.
During his visits to classes, Fr. Brown was able to answer students’ more particular questions. His visit to our campus helps to remind Regis Jesuit of the profound intellectual heritage we receive from both the Catholic Church and from the Society of Jesus. It was a great blessing to have him here!
