Our Immersion Continues

The Tecate Montessori School and Reynaldo's Story
Hello from Tijuana! It's Kiley and Manus here to fill you in on all the adventures we had today. We started the day off with an amazing breakfast from Leo and Caro. We both ate our fair share of chocolate chip pancakes to fuel up for the day. We then boarded the bus to travel to Tecate, Mexico. We drove for about an hour and observed downtown Tijuana as we drove. We met up with the Tecate Montessori School pupils at Professors Park. We took a scenic hike through the park in small groups in a cross-cultural exchange. We had a great experience with the headmaster of the school. He told us about the various plants native to the land and told us which ones smelt, and which ones to avoid. Although we are used to amazing views, we had a great time meeting new friends and observing all of the amazing nature.  We had some classic PB & Js, and then we took the drive to a market! When we arrived at the market, we walked around in small groups to observe the culture around us. We enjoyed walking around and observing the interactions happening around us. Manus and I felt a little out of place not knowing any Spanish. We found our own fun watching a little boy feed a flock of pigeons, though.

We then headed to an art exhibit on human migration and admired the complex artwork. After the exhibit, we got back on the bus and started our commute home. We got to experience a breathtaking sunset as we drove back to the condos. We then had another delicious dinner made by Leo and Caro. After that, we got to meet Reynaldo. To begin our conversation, we shared our own family histories and experiences with migration. Then Reynaldo shared his story of growing up in Honduras and his desire to migrate after seeing his cousin’s success in the U.S. He described the migration process, and the things he saw. It was very interesting to hear a first-hand account of his experience. It opened our eyes up to the reasons why people migrate and the trauma that comes with being deported 4 times. Reynaldo sharing his story was phenomenal, and we could not be more grateful. We rounded off the day with our group reflections and more team bonding.
