Immersion Experience: Denver

DAY 1 - A DAY FOR MUTUAL AID

by Emma O'Dwyer '24
Starting off a bright Monday morning at 8AM, our Theology of Encounter class came together for the beginning of an unforgettable five days.
Our first stop of the day was at the Decatur- Federal Station, where we gathered with Jonathan and Alejandra and learned about their company, Pedestrian Dignity. Their mission- to bring justice and awareness to injustices that are right in front of us. From this experience, a moment that stood out to me were the numerous in-memoriam signs posted near deadly intersections. Hearing that remembrance is quickly acknowledged was comforting, but the fact no legislative or local action is taken was disheartening. I hope in the future we can speed up action taken to address these problems. After a quick lunch by our hosts at Casa Karibu, some weird rounds of charades and accordion musicals, we made our way to City Hall where we watched a bill regarding the sweeping of encampments around the City of Denver get passed by one vote. Opinions were all over the place, but I think the passing was a small step forward in hopefully catalyzing more impactful change. Following this, we helped out with Mutual Aid Monday, an event that provides food, haircuts, and clothes to the unhoused community.  I’d say Monday was an amazing start to an eventful immersion.
