DR. CAROLYN LOVE CHALLENGES STUDENTS TO FIND AND USE GIFTS IN BUILDING A JUST AND MORE HUMANE WORLD
In the second installment of Regis Jesuit’s Wisdom of Women Speaker Series, Dr. Carolyn Love prompted audience members to think about what gift they can bring to the pursuit of the magis, which she interprets as that which promotes greater dignity, freedom and responsibility for ourselves and others. She shared that hers is the gift of encouragement, which she uses to elevate people involved in the struggle for equity, dignity and human rights. Then, with Dr. Love’s encouragement, several students shared their gifts with the assembled group of about 40.
Raised in Gary, Indiana by parents who grew up in Mississippi, Dr. Love declared when she was only 15 that she wanted to end racism in her lifetime. She views the hatred and oppression of a group solely based on skin color as illogical and has spent her life focusing on that goal, affiliating herself with organizations focused on justice, like the NAACP, ACLU and National Minority Supplier Development Council.
Love earned her doctorate in leadership and change at Antioch University and is the founder of Kebaya Coaching & Consulting, a Denver-based organization focused on enhancing leadership talent in organizations, creating equitable and inclusive workplaces, and facilitating meaningful and sustainable change. She is also an affiliate faculty member at Regis University in their Master of Nonprofit Management Program, which is where RJ College Counselor Cari Maciolek encountered her while taking Love’s class, Leading from Within. Maciolek nominated Dr. Love to be part of the speaker series.
After prompting attendees to consider their gifts, Dr. Love concluded her presentation by offering four challenges:- Determine your life’s purpose and how you will actualize it in the world.
- Learn how to appropriately and authentically use the six most difficult words – I was wrong and I am sorry.
- Learn how to move past fear.
She cited 2 Timothy 1:7 - For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control, and shared a story about Civil Rights activist Diane Nash to illustrate how to overcome fear when confronted with a moral dilemma that pits our individual need/want with the common good. - Learn the art of reflection by embracing the power of meditation and prayer.
Dr. Love’s presentation provided much food for thought, both in the moment and to consider moving forward. We are so grateful she accepted the invitation to be part of this series.
